October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Darien Library invites you to join doctors from Stamford Health for an educational evening to bring awareness and understanding of breast health and what you should know at every age.

This engaging conversation by physician specialists from Stamford Health and Dana Farber Brigham Cancer Center will discuss screening, prevention, and genetic testing; what is to be expected when one receives a breast cancer diagnosis; and finally, themes, advances, and clinical trials available locally through Stamford Health's partnership with Dana Farber Brigham Cancer Center.

About the Physicians:

Dr. Sarah Cate is a breast surgical oncologist, specializing in breast cancer surgery. She joins Stamford Health as the chief of the division of breast surgery. She is a graduate of UMDNJ/ Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and trained in general surgery at Westchester Medical Center. She is a graduate of the Mount Sinai West and Downtown Breast Surgery Fellowship. Dr. Cate has a special interest in oncoplastic surgery, as well as nipple-sparing mastectomies with direct-to-implant reconstruction. She is board certified in general surgery and is certified in Hidden-Scar™ surgery. She was previously at Mount Sinai for 10 years, where she developed and lead high-risk programs for the Mount Sinai Health System, as well as lead the breast surgery quality program for the last two years. 

Dr. Philip D. Poorvu received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2012 and went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. He is a medical oncologist in the breast Oncology Center and has a particular interest in the care of young women with breast cancer and breast cancer survivorship. His research seeks to better understand the impact of cancer treatments on fertility and a number of other survivorship issues. Dr. Poorvu's research is also focused on the use of genomic risk prediction assays and predictive biomarkers to help guide the management of breast cancer patients.

Dr. Mia Kazanjian is currently the co-director of Stamford Health’s Breast Center and was certified by the American Board of Radiology in 2016. A graduate from Brown University,  she received her medical degree in 2010 from Mount Sinai School of Medicine's Humanities and Medicine program. Dr. Kazanjian completed her first year of radiology training at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell, with rotations at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She then spent four years in Palo Alto, California, at Stanford University Hospital, graduating from their radiology residency in 2015. She dedicated her last year of residency at Stanford to fellowship-level training in body imaging, focusing on advanced modalities of CT, ultrasound, and MRI, and also completed a full year fellowship in breast imaging at Stanford University Hospital in 2016.
