Event Details

Join us for an insightful event as we explore the profound impact of the atomic age and the emergence of nuclear weaponry on the world stage. We will delve into the historical context, significant milestones, and the everlasting threat of nuclear annihilation.

The cataclysmic finality of Man's greatest industrialized war reached its fiery end with the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These tragic events marked the beginning of the Atomic Age, which would forever change the world.

Mark Albertson will discuss the shift in the balance of power from the Western European colonial powers to the United States and the Soviet Union. The once-dominant empires gave way to the new superpowers, leading to an intense race for nuclear domination.

Join us as we explore the words of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the leader of the Manhattan Project, who famously remarked, "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds," drawing from Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita. We will delve into Oppenheimer's revulsion at the devastation caused by the atomic bombings and his subsequent efforts to advocate for the outlawing of nuclear weapons.

Learn about the intense discussions that took place between Oppenheimer and President Truman regarding the moral implications and future use of nuclear weapons. Truman's controversial response and subsequent awarding of the Medal of Merit to Oppenheimer will be examined, shedding light on the complex dynamics of this pivotal era in history.

Don't miss this opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the post-1945 world and the ever-present threat of nuclear annihilation. Join us for an engaging lecture that sheds light on the transformative impact of the atomic age.
