Program Description

Event Details

Let's look to Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton to learn much about the political culture of America in its earliest years. Indeed, many of the important plot points in the musical describe dramatized events in the lives of figures such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Aaron Burr, Eliza Hamilton, and naturally, the eponymous Alexander.

This might read as dry history, but one of the things that makes the musical so successful is how the songs are structured in a way to be both aurally compelling and effective in the narrative sense.

During this program, Professor Gil Harel will discuss the impressive score of Hamilton, highlighting significant themes and leitmotifs that frame the action. Together, we will analyze seminal events in American history, including elections in the late 18th century, as well as the Compromise of 1790, the Reynolds Affair, and more. By studying the music, we will gain insight into an iconic chapter of American history and see how the music intertwines smoothly with the storytelling.
