One of the most beloved artists of our time, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) painted iconic works throughout his lifetime; even at its inception, Matisse recognized the significance of The Red Studio when he completed it in 1911. While extremely controversial in its early years, the painting is now considered a foundational work of modern art and a landmark in the genre of the painting of the studio. Join Page Knox for a discussion of Matisse's career and the important role that The Red Studio played in his evolution as a painter as well as the life of the painting itself, as it made its way from the suburbs of Paris, to London, across the United States to ultimately reside at the Museum of Modern Art and influence artists of future generations.
