Start off the spring season by making a pledge to plant a native tree each and every year!  Stop by the Seed Library on the first floor for our second annual tree give away in honor of Arbor Day*.  This year's selection is witch hazel, Hamamelis virginiana.

Let's take a deep dive into witch hazel!  It is a small understory tree that is often multi trunked.  It blooms in the late fall and has showy, bright yellow, ribbon like flowers.  It has tons of medicinal qualities, is regenerative (grows back), so harvesting it is a sustainable practice.  Considered a small, tree, it typically grows up to 10 - 15 feet. It is deciduous. Connecticut has many of these trees, and is, unofficially, the witch hazel capital of the world.  A fun factoid:  in the fall, seeds are expelled explosively from the capsules--up to 30 feet away!  This crazy phenomenon is known as explosive seed dispersal.  Stop by and find out more interesting facts!

The sapling you receive is very small, but very mighty in its future. Remember, "your legacy should not be that you cut down trees; it should be that you planted them." - unknown
