Program Description
Event Details
Join us for an evening with Lenore Skenazy, author of the monumental book, Free-Range Kids, and the co-founder of Let Grow, a non-profit promoting childhood independence as the key to resourcefulness and resilience.
We all love our kids, but in the past generation or two, something strange has happened: The same parents who were allowed to ride their bikes till the streetlights came on -- and loved it! -- won't let their own children out of their sight. If you've wondered how this happened (not your fault!), what it's doing to kids, and the connection between supervision and anxiety, here's your chance to find out! You'll also hear how all of us can fight the excess fear our culture is shoving down our throats.
Lenore's lecture is smart, funny -- and life-changing. Parents will leave with new confidence in their kids, their parenting, and the world. AND their cheeks hurt -- because they've been laughing so much.
This program was made possible through the generous support of Katherine & Pat Spellane, Tiere & Bill Hessert, and Community Cooperative Nursery School, the Friends of Darien Library, and an Anonymous Family.
Speaker Bio
Ever since her column "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone" created a media firestorm, Lenore Skenazy has been declaring our kids are smarter and stronger than our culture gives them credit for. She is the author of Free-Range Kids, the book-turned-parenting movement that garnered her the nickname, “World’s Worst Mom.” You may have seen her on The Today Show, The Daily Show, Dr. Phil, or her own reality show, World’s Worst Mom on Discovery Life.
A popular keynote speaker, Lenore has given talks everywhere from Microsoft to Disney, as well as at K–12 schools and colleges across the country, including her alma mater, Yale. Before all of this, Lenore was a reporter and columnist at the New York Daily News and the New York Sun. She lives in New York with her husband. Her sons are gainfully employed!
