Author Event: A Conversation About "Remarkable Women" with Alice Look

Join Darien Library and Barrett Bookstore for a special Women's History Month program as they welcome author, Alice Look. She will discuss her inspirational new book, Remarkable Women: Reclaiming their Stories. Alice, along with Jane Applegate, is the co-founder of The Remarkable Women Project. 

The event, moderated by Darien Library Director Kiera Parrott, will feature a video trailer as well as a lively interactive segment with the audience.

The illustrated book features compelling stories of 23 women whose accomplishments in the face of great odds, will inspire and encourage a next generation to change the world for the better. From Ada Lovelace, who was the first computer programmer in 1843 to Opal Lee, the "grandmother of Juneteenth" to Katalin Kariko, winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize for Medicine for her groundbreaking work that made COVID-19 vaccines possible -- remarkable women have changed our world. The 23 women in Remarkable Women: Reclaiming Their Stories made a difference as activists, scientists, inventors, bold creatives, fearless journalists and aviators.

About the Project

The Remarkable Women Project's goal is to support the writers, researchers, producers and directors working on more than 300 stories about women who overcame racism, sexism and numerous obstacles to their personal and professional success. Look, an executive producer, and Jane Applegate, an independent film producer and editor of the book, founded the Remarkable Women Project to share the unheralded accomplishments of women throughout history.

Alice Look is a writer and former journalist. Over a three-decade career in television, she worked at several news and entertainment networks. At A&E, she managed an in-house production team that created episodic series, documentaries and short-form content for A&E, FYI, History and Lifetime networks. She currently has two screenplays in development and is working on the next edition of stories about remarkable women.  Look is a Darien resident.

Jane Applegate has produced a variety of feature films and documentaries, including To Keep the Light, a period drama set in Jonesport, Maine in the 1860’s and health docs for NBC and Discovery Health. She teaches the Business of Film course at the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema at Brooklyn College. Applegate is the author of five books on business success and the co-founder of Showbizing.com, a company offering entertainment career guidance and production consulting.
