We all know that Central Park is one of America’s most important works of art, a masterpiece of landscape architecture. However, it is also an outstanding outdoor museum of sculptures, architecture, and decorative arts.
Join Sara Cedar Miller, Central Park Conservancy Historian emerita, who will talk about the stories and designs behind the park’s 31 cast-iron, stone and brick bridges, and its iconic Victorian architecture. Bethesda Terrace, the Dairy, Belvedere Castle, Tavern on the Green and structures now destroyed--the Bandstand, and the Mineral Springs Pavilion--are all influenced from this era. She will also talk about the famous Carousel and the rustic benches, fences, and summerhouses which are celebrated works of American folk art. Discover the over fifty statues and monuments that range from the Egyptian Obelisk, to the famous Angel of the Waters fountain that appears in so many films, to Balto, one of the Park’s many beloved animal sculptures.
After this talk, you will discover Central Park in an entirely new way!
