Art on View

A mosaic exhibition by Roger Brown will be on display in the Main Reading Room at Darien Library from July 22 through September 1. An artist’s reception will be held at the Library on Friday, July 25 at 6:30 p.m.

Brown, a Darien resident, is a self-taught artist who has focused on the creation of fine art mosaics since 1998. During this period he has given seven solo shows of his mosaics in galleries and cultural centers in Hong Kong, Massachusetts, California, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. He has completed in excess of 200 mosaics; his pieces range from small corner pieces of 10 to 12 inches square to prominent statement pieces of six-by-five feet.

Mr. Brown draws upon his extensive experience as an oil painter to create challenging and worthy images in mosaic. According to Brown, “Artists both past and present have been slow to employ mosaic as a direct medium because of the need to develop a skill set as well as commitment of time once an image is decided upon. A painting of four-by-three feet might take hours or days to complete whereas the same sized mosaic could be months in the making.”

The focal point of the Library exhibition will be “Amphitrite hides and awaits.” Considered by many as the mosaicist’s best work, the piece measures six-by-five feet and was completed in 2007.

Great Blue Heron Sculpture

Genevieve C. Betts
A painting of Monemvasia, Greece was anonymously donated to the Darien Library in honor of Genevieve C. Betts, in recognition of her twenty-five years of service devoted to the Darien Library. Barbara Smith, Mrs. Betts’s daughter, painted the landscape.

Outdoor Sculpture
The Darien Library commissioned a sculpture from Elliot Offner for a piece that would stand in the courtyard of the library. In 1987 he completed a sculpture of the Great Blue Heron, which is indigenous to the shores of Connecticut. The bronze was the first piece of public sculpture in Darien. The symbol of the heron appears on the library's publications, commemorative tote bags and Web pages.
